Overview

This qualification is ideal for anyone who wants to gain the skills, knowledge and competence to work in day to day roles that require you to give advice and guidance. It covers: communication and interactions to support clients in preparing and completing their chosen actions; the knowledge required to work with legislative and procedural frameworks; working with other services through negotiation, liaison and referral. On completion of this qualification you will be able to provide advice and guidance in a professional or voluntary role, you may also supervise and support other staff members.

Course modules

Module 1: Understand the importance of legislation and procedures (R/602/5210)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand legislation and codes of practice which impact on their role.
  • Understand how to deal with urgent situations.
  • Be able to record contacts, interactions, agreements, and provision of information.
  • Understand the actual or potential effect of own values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours when working.
  • Understand why the effectiveness of methods may vary depending upon the situation and clients involved.

Module 2: Establish communication with clients for advice and guidance (J/602/5138)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the factors that contribute to effective communication with clients.
  • Establish effective communication with clients.
  • Understand how to minimise difficulties when communicating with clients.
  • Be able to minimise difficulties in communication.

Module 3: Support clients to make use of the advice and guidance service (L/602/5139)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Enable clients to decide whether to use the service.
  • Identify and provide accurate information required by clients.
  • Understand the services provided by other suitable services.
  • Provide information on other suitable services.
  • Agree with clients their use of the service.

Module 4: Develop interactions with advice and guidance clients (F/602/5140)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Enable clients to explore their issues.
  • Sustain interactions with clients.
  • Bring interactions to a close.

Module 5: Interact with clients using a range of media (J/602/5141)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Establish interaction with clients using a range of media.
  • Deal with problems maintaining interactions.
  • Provide information and focus on the clients’ requirements.
  • Understand how to communicate using a range of media.
  • Identify risks to the client.

Module 6: Assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action (R/602/5143)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Assist clients to clarify their requirements.
  • Negotiate boundaries with clients.
  • Assist clients to review and prioritise their decisions.
  • Assist clients select a course of action.
  • Understand the importance of autonomy for the client.

Module 7: Review own contribution to the service (Y/602/5192)

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Assess own contribution to the work of the service.
  • Develop to achieve work objectives.

Requirements

Learners must be a minimum of 16 years old.

There are no formal entry requirements to enrol on this C&G Certificate in Advice and Guidance Level 3 qualification; however learners must ensure that they have the opportunity to gain evidence for the qualification in the work place, as the majority of assessment for this competence-based qualification will take place in the workplace under real work conditions, using a range of assessment methods.

Assessment

After each unit there will be a question paper which needs to be completed and submitted to your assessor for marking. This method of continual assessment ensures your assessor can monitor your progress and provide you with assistance throughout the course.

You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper. The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is 149 hrs.
